... does he still stand for

... truth, justice, and all that stuff? yesh, it's true people. he does. and that line is actually said in the film. wifee, D & L, and i saw superman returns this 4th of july and well.. we've all got one thing to say about it overall... wow.

now, this is the opinion of me.. jes' me.. but i can honestly say that i was very impressed overall with Bryan Singer's film adaptation of the original franchise. Bryan's style is that of character development, and not all action, explosions and violence. it's superbly filmed, backed by a fairly decent storyline and completes the overall tone with tons of nods toward the original films that creates an occasional emotional "pang" to those who watched the original two films with awe. special note to all that have NOT seen this film.. this is NOT AN ACTION FILM. It's a story that tries to, go figure, tell a story of heroes, lost love, newfound purpose and more...

note that i said two (2) films. that's right. creative merit and the magic of hollywood has decided that the latter (2) films never happened. disasters of script, acting, and effects anyway, it's better that they lay to rest anyway... Bryan picks up 5 years after the end of part II, where, if you all recall, superman shows lois his fortress of solitude, and eventually reveals himself to her as clark... of course, that magical kiss that wipes her noggin' of all previous event clears the way for his five year trek that builds the story for today's film.

for the record, there are some really really stoopid and almost unnecessary things in this film. a couple of plot drops that pissed me off, but thankfully there was enough of that old superman/clark bumbling humor, dasterdly badguys, (kevin spacey is a goddmamned genius portraying Lex Luthor, previous held by gene hackman) foolish henchmen, and even the dimwitted charm and ageless wonder of Jimmy, the daily planet's newsroom photographer.

overall: loved it. loved it back in 1978 as that wide-eyed 6 year-old, loved it yesterday when i felt again.. like that 6 year-old as special effects caused a wondrous sonic boom and push of air as he soared back down toward earth. it was good to believe... even if jes' for a moment.

Jack - so you saw it? or still wanna?

Prairie Princess - loved it, eh? whatcha like about it?

Croak - Critics are critics. I honestly rarely listen to their opininons because I've enjoyed some great films in my life that they've all turned a thumb down toward. It's allllll about individual interpretation. I happen to know that Brandon Routh had his own expectations and preferences to how the role should be played... the DVD will likely show some of his earlier test-takes and excerpts that showed a more relaxed and lanky superman. Yesh, this version was more about strong poses and flexed muscles as he performed mighty feats... This was Bryan Singer's vision. He wanted to bring back the marvel (no DC/Marvel pun intended) of this once, great icon to us all!

There are also at least 3 huge action scenes that ended up on the cutting room floor because it was decided that the movie should be more about the impact of his return, how it empowered the people to act, and simple marvels like the power of flight! (something shown many times throughout the movie with key nods to the original films, Reeves styles, and even comic books nods such as his dependence on the UV rays of the sun to regain his strength... which, BTW, is why he needed a "ship" to come home... no UV rays to give him powers of flight)

i found him deliciosly bumbling as Clark Kent, and stoic and much needed as almost a quiet and foreboding character in the suit.

Was he fantastic? no. Brandon can grow into the role wonderfully tho.
"wood" i call it "wooden," not at all. He was following the directions of an occasionally brilliant director.

up, up, and awayyyyyy!

The movie was perfect for fans of the Superman 2 because it left right the way it ended "5 years later" It was great to think about the things that happened in 2 and how they where brought up.
