... how much is that novel in the window?

... how much would that puppy be? i was doin' some research last night regarding the cost of graphic novels both on bookstore shelves and the internet. i must say i was amazed at what people are paying for limited edition artwork nowadays. for any of you who've not visited my somethinsketchy site and read my 'reflections' comic that i've been restoring for many weeks now, i've been thinking ahead as to what any next steps would be once i finished the piece... if any.

you see, this is my connundrum too. should i take the final piece and reproduce it again?, or jes' leave it fully online once i'm finished. there's something to be said about the joy of looking at a printed and professionally produced graphic novel though: crisp pages, colorful artwork, a lingering excitement once each page is turned...

back to my research. i found that most printed novels go for anywhere between $19.95 to $42.95 depending on pages, print-style, and other silly things like bindery styles, etc. i wouldn't bound this badboy in leather or any of that stuff, so no worries there. of course, i have yet to price out production costs beyond my own time. i don't have all my original pages in front of me, but i believe we'd be looking at roughly a 24 page production run including any cover/back and forwards wrapped up in there.

so, here's the question: would any of you who have become a fan of my project/story/comic WANT to purchase a final graphic novel? It'd be a limited run, and each one could be signed and numbered in case my arse ever becomes famous. (giggle) and if so, what would you be willing to pay? ('course, all you can do to answer this is see what i've produced so far on my other site and use that as a guide to help you judge)

the other option is a "soft copy" produced entirely online, but in a "pay to download" format if you wanted a professionally produced PDF download that resembled a finished novel, complete with Cover/Back and Forward. (this would drive costs down considerably, but not exactly anything physical beyond the dimensions of your computer monitor)

any thoughts? and thanks ahead of time for helping me with my thought process! hope you all have a phenomenal week.

Quite a conundrum.

You must certainly do the research on production costs for both methods.

Perhaps you can begin with the "soft copy" production to get capitol for the one of a kind, limited edition, signed, numbered and bound in fake Morrocan leather for the true collector?

Just some thoughts.

what a great idea, jack, thank you. it also would likely serve as a proper buzz to get other's interested. i actually have NO wish to go into production, but to be honest, i've already been asked over a dozen times as to if i'll be making some kind of final compilation at the end of this "reflections" journey.

thanks!

I only just recently saw this kind of 'creativity' on a table in my local bookstore and I feel like it's greek to me.

I have no useful advice, but I can say that you are very talented and certainly versatile :)

loving your comments...thanks

Now to really get the thoughts in an uproar. Having kids who buy graphic novels, the paperback kind, at comic book stores, and what they buy are usually the japanese graphics. What they pay for them is about ten dollars for a novel that is about 100 pages long.

Anyway, I like the idea of a published novel to have in my hand. I, for one, would buy one.

b/sister - i laughed over your wording of "this type of 'creativity' " -- that makes me think yer not a fan of graphic novels or comics... ;)

either way, maybe i can convert you to see it as a work of art, i lieu of jes a comic-style drawn story...

Adrianne- i actually shuddered when i read your comment. i've seen many of the low quality anime'-style comic books that have innundated the US market over the past few years. some are amazing, most are spit out like trade rags and have very low quality stories, paper quality & more... Yer price point is bang on tho. i would hope that my work would be more of a coffee table-type of piece.. quality paper, full color, etc. -- perhaps i should've mentioned that in my post... thank you!

Viking Woman - with that hat, you can visit my site anytime girl! giggle. welcome to my world, i hope that someday you find the urge to write about and express yours. it's a big step, and if & when you do, i hope to learn more about you and the rest of your amazing family. you all seem so damned cooh... i'm sure i'm dreaming.

;)

Hugs to you all!

let me say this...the only thing i like reading on the web is the occasional news story and blogs! in other words, i don't like reading anything LONG on the internet.

vesper - thanks for your feedback! on a bright note, a 24 page story = about 12 actual pages, and being that it's a purdy comic-book, it's mainly equally purdy pictures and not a lot of text.

:)

tee hee

i agree tho. too much reading hurts my head.
